Position Summary:  

The Media and Communications Manager will be responsible for providing direct support to the Sikh Coalition’s earned, placed, and digital media work. This junior-level position is ideal for someone passionate about elevating the Sikh voice in the American civil rights conversation. S/he will have the opportunity to learn about, contribute to, and eventually manage both traditional and creative communications initiatives, and to touch all areas of the Sikh Coalition’s work in the legal, advocacy, community development, and education spaces.

The Media and Communications Manager should have a strong passion for advocacy on behalf of the Sikh community and a fundamental understanding of the value that media and communications work brings to achieving policy change. The candidate should possess strong writing abilities and attention to detail, be willing to learn new skills quickly, and thrive in a fast-paced work environment that balances immediate and long-term projects.

The Sikh Coalition is a national, community-based organization with offices and staff in New York City, California (Bay Area and Los Angeles), Washington D.C., and Chicago. Please note that this position is based in New York, and that a willingness and ability to work with colleagues and community members in a range of programmatic fields and across four time zones is essential.



The Media and Communications Manager will be responsible for:

  • Helping to draft as well as editing and scheduling content for the organization’s email communications, including programmatic updates, advocacy work, fundraising asks, and our monthly newsletter;
  • Helping to develop and implementing the organization’s social media strategy, increasing engagement with our audiences across Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram;
  • Updating and maintaining the organization’s website;
  • Conducting research in support of various media initiatives and building out targeted press lists;
  • Helping to engage reporters and producers both reactively and proactively on the stories that matter to the Sikh American community;
  • Helping and executing on graphic design and video needs for the organization; and
  • Helping to craft earned, placed, and digital media strategies in support of all programmatic areas of the organization’s work. 


The ideal candidate for the Media and Communications Manager position will have:

  • A bachelor’s degree and at least one year of experience in the fields of communications, journalism, public relations, or advocacy;
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills, with a fine attention to detail in both areas;
  • A demonstrated ability to do quick and thorough research using a variety of sources;
  • Experience with WordPress or other website management platforms;
  • Experience drafting and scheduling content for organizational social media accounts (including a familiarity with Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram);
  • Interest in media relations, with an understanding of how to quickly and fully meet the needs of reporters and producers; and
  • A passion for understanding and influencing the national media conversation, especially as it pertains to issues of civil rights, social justice, and religious freedom.

Additional qualifications that are beneficial, but not required, include:

  • Punjabi language proficiency;
  • Experience, volunteer or professional, working with the Sikh American community;
  • Experience with Adobe Creative Suite or similar programs for graphic design and video projects;
  • Experience with Salsalabs, Pardot, or other mass email tools; and
  • Experience with Cision or other press research tools.
