The Sikh Coalition is a nonprofit community-based organization that works towards the realization of civil and human rights for all people. The organization was launched in direct response to discrimination and backlash against Sikhs in America after 9/11. Since then, the Sikh Coalition has grown into the largest Sikh civil rights organization in the United States by delivering lasting and measurable results on behalf of Sikhs and non- Sikhs alike. With an annual budget of $2 million, the organization has a staff of 18 and is looking for a Media & Communications Director to join the leadership team.
The Sikh Coalition has favorably settled high-impact religious discrimination cases against government agencies, Fortune 500 countries and successfully secured religious accommodations for Sikhs to serve in the U.S. Army. Our legal team also provides direct support to the victims and survivors of school bullying and hate crimes nationwide. The Sikh Coalition Advocacy and Education teams work to protect and secure civil rights laws and education standards that are inclusive of all religious minorities at the local, state and federal levels. Our Community Development program develops and maintains grassroots initiatives aimed at empowering the Sikh community to fight for Sikh rights. This work averages nearly 200 media hits a month and has been featured nationally and internationally in outlets including: The New York Times, CNN, The Wall Street Journal, The Washington Post, Fox News, and NPR.

The Sikh Coalition’s Media & Communications Director will report to the Sikh Coalition’s Deputy Director and will be responsible for managing projects and staff across all of the organizations various communications channels. This work includes strategy and implementation of: website management, email management, graphic design, community engagement collateral, fund development collateral, traditional media engagement and social media expertise.
This hire will have a strong passion for Sikh advocacy issues and a fundamental understanding of the value that media and communications work brings to achieving our organizational goals. The candidate should possess strong writing abilities, impeccable work ethic, and be willing to learn new skills quickly while balancing the management of a fast paced work environment that requires delivering immediate reactive projects with long-term deliverables.
The media and communications department interacts and contributes to every facet of the Sikh Coalition’s work. A willingness to collaborate with colleagues across the country in different time zones combined with a willingness to learn the nuances of the issue areas we work on is crucial.
The Sikh Coalition continues to develop a team of hard charging, deeply talented individuals, who care about empowering change for Sikh American’s through the courtrooms, classrooms, Congress, and the community. The position will be based at the Sikh Coalition’s national headquarters in New York City, but managed by our Deputy Director based in California. The position will likely require short periods of travel 5-6 times a year.
Manage a team of two full-time with the revolving door of interns and fellows, including performance reviews and evaluations
Sit on the Sikh Coalition’s leadership team with an eye on constantly improving the way that our communications work supports our programmatic goals
Traditional Media Engagement
Manage and execute innovative social media and online campaigns around our policy and advocacy goals
Build and manage long-term strategies to develop and manage relationships with reporters
Seasoned background and copy editing skills to develop and edit press materials, such as pitches, press releases, talking points, and messaging guidance.
Manage a team monitoring daily news to capitalize on reactive and proactive rapid response media engagement opportunities
Draft and place Op-Eds
Implement and manage short-term and long-term plans for increasing the organization’s online presence and following through social media
Manage our graphic design work for social media collateral
Manage a team that monitors and responds to numerous social media platforms that the organization engages on, such as Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, Instagram, and YouTube
Manage the critical decisions that go into content, framing and messaging across all platforms
Manage our email platform while developing new strategies for increasing open rates, retention and growth
Develop and manage monthly analytics plan for tracking organizational communications progress against core deliverables
Manage relationships with clients, organizational allies and community members
Manage reports and analytical summaries on our media engagement that are circulated to senior staff, board members and foundations.
Manage and maintain crisis communications plan
Manage and prepare media trainings for Sikh Coalition staff, partners and community members
Play a managing role in the creative process that helps develop and generate original graphics, flyers, newsletters, videos and additional communications collateral for programmatic work
Manage design, production and dissemination of publications including annual reports, reports, programmatic newsletters and donor communications
Manage the Sikh Coalition’s website, including adding new content, security patches and design updates.
Manage video and film projects.
Manage the communications department to support fundraising efforts, including #GivingTuesday, our End of Year fundraising campaign and fund development printed collateral
Support in writing, reviewing and editing grant proposals and grant reports
A. Preferred Work Experience and Key Skills
A bachelor’s degree with at least 5 years of experience in the area of journalism, public relations, digital organizing, or communications
At least two years of direct management experience
Experience in developing graphic content, with a working knowledge of how to use Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign.
Experience with basic video editing, particularly Final Cut Pro.
Exceptional writing ability, including proofreading and editing skills
Strong understanding of how social media platforms work and the best strategies for optimizing them for our organizational engagement.
Complete understanding of news values the basic needs of reporters, editors, and producers
Experience with CRM, CMS, online advocacy and email tools, including WordPress, Salesforce, and knowledge of HTML and CSS
Punjabi language skills are strongly preferred
Previous professional experience working in the field of media and communications is a prerequisite. Professional experience in the field of civil rights, a bonus
Previous professional or volunteer experience with the Sikh community is preferred
