Job description

The Sikh Coalition seeks a highly motivated Legal Assistant to support our legal team, which provides direct legal assistance and advocates on behalf of Sikhs who have been discriminated against or subject to bias based upon their religious beliefs or Sikh identity.  These include cases of hate crimes, employment discrimination, bias-based school bullying, religion-based discrimination, profiling, and other forms of discrimination.


The Legal Assistant will be an integral part of the Sikh Coalition’s legal team, will attend regular legal team and staff meetings and will have the opportunity to learn about strategies for protecting the rights of Sikh Americans. The ideal candidate will be self-motivated, highly organized, effectively communicate with community members of diverse backgrounds.

RESPONSIBILITIES

 

In this role, the legal assistant will have the opportunity to work with a dynamic, professional and experienced legal team that is viewed by law firms and other civil rights organizations as leading legal experts in its field.  In addition, the legal assistant will work closely with other Sikh Coalition staff members, including policy/legislative, communications, education and development staff to advance the goals of the organization.

 

Responsibilities include:

  • Conducting intakes with prospective clients and responding to legal inquiries;
  • Maintaining case and intake database and managing case flow;
  • Serving as a liaison to current clients and assisting with a variety of casework;
  • Conducting internet and fact-based research;
  • Organizing and maintaining electronic documents, and related administrative support;
  • Running reports on intake trends;
  • Assisting with media and communications work related to legal cases;
  • Working effectively with the organization’s staff on collateral matters (whether advocacy campaigns, media initiatives, fundraising, etc.).

 

QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

 

It is essential that the Legal Assistant function as a spokesperson who can translate the mission and values of the Sikh Coalition as effectuated by its legal program to clients and community members.

 

  • Bachelor’s Degree required.
  • Compassion for clients and ability to connect with and gain the trust of community members of diverse backgrounds;
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills both verbal and written;
  • Bright, hardworking and self-motivated;
  • Able to handle a large caseload, multi-task effectively, and work independently in a fast-paced environment;
  • Fluency in Punjabi is strongly preferred; at a minimum Punjabi skills required.
  • Strong organizational skills, demonstrated attention to detail, resourcefulness in setting priorities, and ability to meet deadlines;
  • Respect for the faith-based roots of the organization and sensitivity to the specific cultural needs of the community;
  • Commitment to social justice;
  • Team player, i.e., is able to work effectively with legal and non-legal staff across all program areas, external co-counsel, board members, interns & fellows.
