Advocacy Intern: New York

Job description

This position can be based in Washington, DC or New York, NY.

Position Summary: The Sikh Coalition is seeking a dedicated & passionate intern to work with the Advocacy team on projects that issue community and policymaker guidance on the atmosphere of hate, discrimination, and bullying in the United States. An ideal candidate would possess skills and background in more than one of these areas: law, policy, civil rights, academic research, public records research (including FOIA requests), and/or grass roots organizing. This candidate must think critically and be a self-starter who can take general direction and produce specific results.

The internship will be managed by the National Advocacy Manager, who will be sharing project management responsibilities on a variety of advocacy related projects that you will be working on. This is an excellent opportunity for individuals interested in civil rights to build and strengthen skills in research, analysis, and writing in a non-profit setting that helps empower and educate. In addition, the internship provides an opportunity for the individual to gain an understanding of how civil rights organizations and other stakeholders advocate for policies, build relationships with federal and state government officials, and interact with civil rights leaders.

Responsibilities include:

·    Research, track, and manage bias incident reports throughout the U.S.

·    Identify correlations or trends from research findings.

·    Draft reports of research findings for publication.

·    Draft memoranda and letters to state and state and federal policymakers.

·    Develop advocacy guidance for local stakeholders.

·    Help coordinate external advocacy efforts, outreach programs, and initiatives

·    Assist in speaking to government officials and academic researchers.

Requirements

The summer internship is a full-time commitment for 10 weeks. A stipend will be provided upon completion.

Qualifications:  The Sikh Coalition is looking for passionate individuals dedicated to protecting and advocating for the civil and human rights of all individuals.

We are looking for someone who has:

  • High level of attention to detail and organization.
  • Highest personal levels of ethical conduct, confidentiality, and integrity, with strongest professional reputation in the industry.

  • Knowledge of the Sikh Coalition's mission and previous initiatives is a plus.
